Buyer answer · Water-soluble PVA materials

How do I source PVA yarn in the 20S to 100S count range?

Direct answer

State the count system before sourcing a 20S–100S PVA yarn; the range alone does not define a grade. Specify tolerance, single or plied construction, twist and package, then request written confirmation for the exact count and dissolution conditions.

Write the count system before asking for a 20S–100S range

A request for ‘20S to 100S’ is incomplete because S alone does not identify the count system. A count written in a cotton-count convention is not directly interchangeable with a metric count or a linear-density unit. Ask the buyer or supplier to name the system, target value and tolerance, then confirm whether the number refers to a single yarn or a plied construction. Do not compare factory offers until both parties are using the same convention.

The range also says nothing about how the yarn is built. State single or plied, twist direction and level if relevant, package format, intended machine, and the role the yarn performs. For a water-soluble product, separately identify the required removal window and the exposure the yarn must tolerate before removal. Count and dissolution grade are distinct parts of a specification.

Make offers comparable with a written specification

If the current process uses an incumbent yarn, send its technical description or a labeled sample for a like-for-like discussion. A sample can reveal construction details that a short purchase description omits, but the supplier should still state the offered count basis in writing. When a conversion between count systems is needed, record the original basis, calculation and rounding tolerance rather than passing around an unlabeled number.

Check the exact count on the sample and the process

Ask how the reported count was determined, how many packages or specimens the result represents, and whether the stated tolerance applies to each package or a lot average. Agree the measurement basis before testing; otherwise, buyer and factory may report different numbers without either calculation being obviously wrong. For filament or plied products, clarify the count basis of the finished construction, not only the input yarn.

Then run the requested construction on the intended equipment. Observe unwinding, tension and any conversion issue, and perform the actual removal test where relevant. A count test cannot establish that the yarn will feed well or clear from a dense fabric. If the trial fails, identify whether the issue is count, twist, package or process conditions before changing more than one part of the specification.

Request a quote for one exact count and configuration

Rather than requesting one quote for a wide 20S–100S range, ask for a specific count and tolerance for each planned product. Include sample quantity, production quantity, package, destination and delivery basis. If the supplier can offer only part of the range, record that clearly; do not assume every value between two endpoints is available or commercially identical.

Before approval, compare the supplier's written specification to the sample label and quote. A matching count system, construction, grade and package should appear consistently in all three. If a later order uses another count or ply, treat it as a new configuration and repeat the checks that matter to that process.
